Why We Celebrate
Juneteenth—also known as Freedom Day—marks the moment on June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned of their emancipation, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day that honors Black freedom, the ongoing pursuit of justice, and the enduring strength of the African American spirit.
